Getting Cited By ChatGPT And Perplexity: GEO For Cannabis Businesses
Short answer
AI assistants cite pages that state a complete, specific answer near the top, carry structured schema markup, agree with the business data published elsewhere on the web, and sit on a domain the model's sources already reference. Keyword density plays almost no role.
Answer first, then elaborate
Language models extract passages, not pages. A page that opens with a two-sentence direct answer to the question in its title is far more quotable than one that builds toward a conclusion after four paragraphs of positioning.
Include the specifics a model can attribute: numbers, timeframes, named systems, state names, dates. Vague claims are not citable because there is nothing to quote.
Structure the machine can read
Connected JSON-LD — Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList — removes ambiguity about what your entity is and what each page contains. For multi-location retail, per-location LocalBusiness markup with consistent NAP data is the single highest-value piece.
Consistency across the web matters as much as markup on your own site. If your hours, address or business category differ between your site, your Google Business Profile and the cannabis directories, you look less reliable to systems that cross-check.
Be present where models already look
Models draw disproportionately from sources they were trained on and from live retrieval over a narrow set of trusted domains. For this industry that includes major cannabis directories, local press, industry trade publications and review platforms.
That makes conventional public relations and directory accuracy part of AI visibility work, not a separate activity.
Track it like a channel
Query the major assistants regularly for the questions your customers ask, record whether you appear and what is said about you, and treat incorrect statements as a content gap to fill rather than a bug to report.
Citation share moves faster and less predictably than classic rankings. Measure the trend over months, not week to week.
